Workshop Description:

This course is designed to provide students with an intensive introduction to traditional figurative sculpture based on techniques from Italian and European old Masters. Focus of the course will be on molding in clay sculpture directly from a live model in order to study the human form. In particular it will cover the techniques of clay modeling and his tools. The course will include, anatomy, observation, modeling, gesture, proportion, plane, shape, volume, line, mass, texture, portraiture, the use of calipers, armatures, and finishing in a creative way. In addition, it will provide an understanding of positive and negative shapes. Individual instruction, class discussion and critiques will be given. Students are encouraged to develop a critical eye. This class works from the nude, with one pose generally lasting the entire course.

About the Instructor:

Dionisio Cimarelli boasts a wide international experience and is one of the most well-known Italian sculptors who exercised, for about nine years, his artistic activity in China. Born in Jesi at Ancona Province in Italy, he holds a Diploma in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara. He also studied at the Repin Institute of Arts (St. Petersburg, Russia) and at the Academy of Fine Arts (Prague, Czech Republic). He participated in restoration projects at the Louvre Museum (Paris), the Royal Church (Copenhagen), the Royal Palace in (Stockholm), at Strasbourg Cathedral (Strasbourg). He has received important scholarships from organizations including the National Sculpture Society and the New York Art Academy (both in New York). He held a solo exhibition at Berlin Philharmonic (Berlin) at the invitation of world-renowned Maestro Claudio Abbado. In 2011 he participated in the Venice Biennale. In 2013, he moved to Monterey, California for a year to act as creative director of a large sculpture studio. In 2014, the US granted him permanent residence via the EB-1 Extraordinary Ability. He has been represented by the following medias: CCTV, Shanghai TV, RAI 3, CNBC Italy, and Oriental TV.
