Class Description

Students will be introduced to various media such as drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture in the studio setting. Occasionally, there will be clothed life models and still lifes to draw, paint, and create a wide range of different forms of art. They will learn and explore the elements of art through fun activities, will be inspired by historic artists, and will be encouraged to express, experiment, and expand their artistic talents.


About the Instructor

Born and raised in Japan, Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York-based artist, art educator, and independent curator who is interested in science, physics, stars, nature, and spirituality.

Her work mixes traditional and contemporary techniques and experiments with materials, color, and shapes. Currently working out of Bushwick, Brooklyn, she has been an artist-in-residence at MASS MoCA, Vermont Studio Center, The Art Students League’s Vytlacil Campus, and Cat’Art Contemporary Art Centre in France. Her work has been exhibited frequently in the United States, Japan, and Europe, including at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center (NYC), Lesley Heller Workspace (NYC), Flinn Gallery (CT), Galerie ARTAe, (Leipzig Germany), and Galerie La and The National Art Center Museum, both in Tokyo.

She received Four-Year Certificate from The Art Students League of New York in painting. In her time there she also studied printmaking and sculpture, and received a Merit Scholarship and the Will Barnet Grant in Printmaking. She currently works with Seeds of the League; The Art Students League’s community program. Since 2013, she has been teaching art-making in-person to children enrolled in NYC Parks Learning Labs and adults in Arts, Culture and Fun workshops in community parks throughout Manhattan. In 2019, the Mayoral Service Recognition Program awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding efforts.
