Participants in the class will learn the foundations of a solid approach to pastels, oil painting, and drawing. Working from live models the class will study light, color, composition, and getting the soul of the subject. The class works from both nude and clothed models, with poses generally lasting three weeks.
About the Instructor:
Sam Goodsell has devoted his life to painting and drawing. He studied intensively with Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students League of New York. Though he has drawn and painted from an early age, Sam began his formal training at Manhattan's High School of Art and Design with such notable instructors as Irwin Greenberg, Irv Docktor, and Max Ginsburg. Throughout the years, he furthered his education with Marybeth McKenzie, Dan Gheno, Nelson Shanks, and Minerva Durham.
His work has garnered many awards throughout his lengthy career including:
The League’s Lloyd Sherwood Grant, 1999; Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant, 2004; and the Gregory Lysun Grant, 2017.
The “Best of Show” Award at the Pastel Journal’s 5th Annual Pastel 100 Competition in 2003; The "Best of Show" Award at the Connecticut Pastel Society's 12th annual exhibition in 2005; The Hudson Valley Art Association Art Spirit Foundation Medal of Honor for Excellence in Pastel at the 75th Anniversary Exhibition in 2006; The Pastel Society of America Herman Margulies Award for Excellence at the 35th Annual Exhibition in 2007.
His work has appeared in various magazines including The Artist’s Magazine, American Artist Magazine, and The Pastel Journal.
Three paintings have been acquired by the USC Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles for their permanent collection.
He has taught for the Pastel Society of America and conducted workshops and live demonstrations throughout the United States.
